1. Engagement problem
Incomplete engagement:
Reason: Long-term use or harsh working environment may cause wear of the drive gear and flywheel ring gear. For example, in a dusty environment, impurities enter the meshing part, which will accelerate the wear of the tooth surface and prevent the gear from fully meshing. In addition, improper installation of the starter, resulting in insufficient concentricity of the shaft, can also cause this situation.
Phenomenon: A harsh "squeak" sound will be emitted during startup, and the engine may start slowly or fail to start because incomplete engagement prevents power from being effectively transmitted to the engine.
Inability to mesh:
Reason: Mainly damage or blockage of mechanical parts. For example, the accumulation of oil and foreign matter on the helical spline shaft prevents the drive gear from moving along the spline shaft to mesh with the flywheel ring gear. It is also possible that the spring connecting the drive gear and the push device is broken and cannot provide sufficient thrust.
Phenomenon: When starting the vehicle, the sound of the starter motor running can be heard, but the engine has no response, as if there is no connection between the starter and the engine.
Unable to disengage:
Reason: Failure of the one-way clutch is the key factor. For example, the roller of the one-way clutch is stuck, causing it to lose its one-way transmission function. In addition, the return spring fails and cannot pull the drive gear back to its original position, which will also cause the inability to disengage.
Phenomenon: After the engine is started, the starter still rotates with the engine, making abnormal noise, and the starter may quickly heat up or even burn out due to long-term high-speed rotation.
2. Power transmission failure
One-way clutch slips:
Reason: The friction plate inside the one-way clutch is worn or the spring elasticity is insufficient, so that it cannot be effectively locked when transmitting power, resulting in reduced power transmission efficiency.
Phenomenon: The engine is difficult to start and requires multiple attempts to start. Because during the starting process, the power cannot be fully transmitted to the engine, causing the engine speed to fail to meet the starting requirements.
Damage to the drive gear:
Reason: Excessive wear, impact loads (such as frequent emergency starts), etc. may cause the teeth of the drive gear to break or deform.
Phenomenon: Abnormal vibration and noise will occur during starting, and the engine cannot start in severe cases.
